The trustees are volunteers who help steer Intercom Trust in the right direction.

Our trustees help provide checks on what we do and how we do it, guidance on how we develop, and ensure we keep  our charitable objectives the focus of our work.

Simon

Simon has been a Trustee of The Intercom Trust since 2018 and Chair of Trustees since 2020.

He has a background in policing, including specialising in Major Crime Investigation and in Equality, Diversity, and Human Rights, he has qualifications in managing equality and diversity as well as in delivering training, however he is now a Director of his own property development company with his husband. He has had, or has board or management roles with the following organisations; Gay Police Association, Gay Outdoor Club, Cornwall Race Equality Council, Cornwall Equality and Diversity Network, and LGBTQ Youth Cornwall which set up Young and Yourself Cornwall in 2008.

In 2021 he became a founder member of the Cornwall RFU Diversity & Inclusion Group. YAY groups are now part of Intercom Trust and take place in The Cornwall LGBTQ Community Centre and in Schools across Cornwall.

Simon regularly delivers training in schools to young people on LGBT+ Awareness and at our conferences as well as other training to a variety of audiences including, teachers, police, social workers, doctors on Equality, Diversity & Human Rights, Hate Crimes and Incidents and LGBT+ Awareness.

Simon is a regular host of an LGBT+ radio show, Rainbow Source on The Source Community Radio Station with his husband, Steve.

Jana

Jana joined the Board of Trustees of the Intercom Trust in 2020.

She is an Associate Professor of English & Sexuality Studies at the University of Exeter. Her academic research focuses on the history of sexuality and early 20th century literature and science, and she has experience directing and managing large collaborative projects. She is also the Co-Chair of the College of Humanities Ethics Committee and a member of the LGBTQ+ Staff Network Coordinator Team at the University of Exeter.

Jana is particularly interested in working with non-academic partners and LGBTQ+ communities to create and share LGBTQ+ heritage. She has collaborated with the British Film Institute, National Trust, Wellcome Collections and other national partners to ensure that LGBTQ+ heritage is revealed and shared with different audiences. She is currently directing the Adventures in Time and Gender project about trans and non-binary histories as well as the Out and About: Queering the Museum project with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM).

Phil

Phil began his career in the field of Drama in Education in 1980, working with diverse groups, including primary and secondary school students, people with disabilities and difficulties, refugees, asylum seekers, prisoners, young offenders and gang members. He founded The Complete Works Charity in 1999, which enables disengaged young people to reignite their interest in education, through creative means.

Working as a teacher, when the full effects of Clause 28 were being felt and experiencing the rise of Aids (in which Phil lost his first partner, who he had been with for 20 years) were challenging times. During this period, Phil focused his energies on staging a series of productions to raise funds for Crusaid and The Terrance Higgins Trust and supporting organisations campaigning for LGBT+ rights.

After spending over 50 years living and working in London, Phil moved to Dartmoor where he now lives with his husband Jamie.

He joined the Intercom Trust as a Trustee in 2021.

Halle

Halle joined Intercom Trust as a Trustee in 2021.

As System Workforce Business Partner for the Integrated Care System in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, Halle is the strategic lead across retention, recruitment, international recruitment and health and wellbeing. Within this role, she collaborates with health and care partners across the BNSSG patch to strategically direct and improve workforce experience. Previous notable roles have included System EDI Lead and Governance Manager at other NHS organisations in Exeter. Prior to this, Halle completed an LLB Law degree at the University of Exeter, specialising in intersectional and feminist legal theory with a keen interest in digital crimes.  Whilst at University, Halle was heavily involved in fundraising both personally and as President of Exeter Raise and Give society.

As a proud young trustee, Halle is particularly interested in workforce, equality, diversity and inclusion and governance.

Adam

Adam joined Intercom Trust in 2021. A psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Private practice, they are particularly interested in queerness and the alienating structure of a normative society.

Their training with the Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis included study of Gender, Sexuality, Race and Class within the subjective field.

Prior to this Adam has worked in the field of mental health coming from their post as Chairman with Cornwall Mind.

They also enjoy triathlon, tennis and scuba diving.

Describing themself as gender variant they hope to bring first hand experience to the board.

Helen joined the Board of Trustees of the Intercom Trust in 2020.

She is Executive Principal for Medical education across Devon and Cornwall for Wave Multi Academy Trust, working to ensure the most vulnerable young people receive the education they are entitled to. Helen is a trained SENCo, a Designated Safeguarding Lead and a Thrive practitioner committed to the principles of Trauma Informed Practice and is passionate about ensuring the needs of all young people are met.

As a trustee, Helen is particularly interested in safeguarding and the links with education.

Michael joined Intercom Trust as a Trustee in 2023

He currently works for 3 Sided Cube, an app development agency who specialise in the ‘Tech for Good’ space, as a Digital Marketing Executive. Michael’s day to day consists of managing and implementing the global digital marketing roadmap for web, social, search & email. He also helps to plan and host internal LGBT+ events to share experiences and educate his fellow employees whilst creating a safe space for all.

Michael originally comes from Portsmouth but in 2021 moved in with his partner Tom to their now forever home in Poole, Dorset. As a young trustee, Michael is particularly interested in Marketing and the charity sector. He hopes to bring his experience to the board to help grow the Intercom Trust brand.

Kaye

Kaye joined the Board of Trustees of Intercom Trust in 2023.

Kaye has a background in education leaving teaching in 2018 to re-train as a counsellor specialising in LGBT+ people. She is passionate about our community’s wellbeing and wants to make a real lasting difference to our communities’ lives. One key reason for becoming a counsellor was to work with what she describes as ‘my chosen family’. Kaye understands the critical importance of safe spaces where queer people can receive specialist counselling and support when they are going through life – whether that is big life-changing decisions or day-to-day flows. She wanted to give back to her LGBT+ community initially joining as a volunteer counsellor and now as part of the trustee team. She wishes to be part of the development of Intercom’s expanding specialist provisions.

Kaye originally comes from Glasgow but moved to Devon in 2004 with her partner Claire and their Persian cats! She was a teacher during the section 28 years and has over three decades experience as an autism and SEN specialist, teacher of the Deaf, SEN Coordinator and therapeutic services lead. She is artistic and an avid birdwatcher.

Kaye is honoured to support the development of Intercom’s services including the mental health services and feed into the strategic planning needed to provide vital services to our community that enable LGBT+ people to thrive.
