We would like to say a big thank you to Nikki Wheeler. She has been working at Intercom for the past 3 months on her Clinical Psychology placement from Plymouth University, and today is her last day with us.

She has been a great member of the team and we would like to wish her all the best for the future.

New enrolments every day.

Intercom's e-learning package, "Aiming for Excellence in LGBT+ Mental Healthcare", was launched at the end of July, and has already passed 50 enrolments. Onwards and upwards!

Our best thanks to those who have already completed the course and sent us their feedback, all of which has been extremely encouraging and helpful.

We wrote this online training course for mental health professionals in the South West. It consists of twenty-one units divided into four modules, and takes about four hours to complete (we suggest doing it in several sessions). And you get a downloadable printable certificate at the end!

Password problems solved, we believe.

A few early users found the login system was malfunctioning: apologies to all of you. We think we've fixed that (there was a gremlin in the commercial software we're using). However, if anyone has any problem logging in after enrolment, e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. He can sort it.

Some of the feedback we've received.

"The course is superb and extremely useful."

"The case studies made me think in more depth about some of the complexities faced by some within the LGBT+ communities."

"It seems to me that so many sectors could and should benefit from this knowledge, e.g. The Police and all other emergency services, Schools, Social Care, etc."

In fact we're already looking at writing similar packages for some of these, so get in touch if you're interested! — Michael

"It's a very valuable resource for those who need insight into supporting and working with LGBT+ people. Well done and thank you for creating the course!"

"I’ve learned: (1) greater confidence in my approach in the use of appropriate and supportive language; (2) better understanding of the possible links with mental health issues; (3) clarity in respect of legal positions."

"I guess I thought that as I have had many LGBT+ friends I was 'aware'. I wasn't, but I will be now. Many thanks."

Intercom is proud to be setting up a new self-help support group for LGBT+ asylum seekers and refugees ("ASR"). The first meeting will be in Exeter on Monday 26th September (2pm - 4pm). The group is to support people who have fled their country of origin in fear of their lives just because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and the group will be meeting on a monthly basis.

Over 70 countries have laws criminalising same sex acts, 5 of them threaten LGBT+ people with the death penalty. Because of this, many people come to the UK to claim asylum, so that they can be who they are without the fear of violence, prison or death. However, we know that many LGBT+ asylum seekers and refugees are living in isolation.

The aim of this group is to be a warm welcoming and friendly place where people can get support and be themselves without fear. So please share this news with anybody that you feel might benefit from such a group. We have a small fund for paying travel costs.
