On Monday 27th November, Intercom is running a conference in Plymouth on the needs of gender-conflicted children and young people, and their families, schools, etc. To find out more about the conference and to register, see below.

What's it about?

Following our first three “Lost in Transition?” conferences in Cornwall & Devon, which generated enormous interest and outstandingly positive feedback, we are hosting our first Gender Identity Conference in Plymouth, where increasing numbers of young people are presenting as Transgender or Gender Variant. We are particularly fortunate to be able to welcome a presentation and workshop from Dr Polly Carmichael and her team from the NHS Tavistock and Portman Gender Clinic, which provides services for young people and their families in Dorset & Wiltshire, and the wider south west.

Resources for schools

We will also showcase our Schools Transgender Guidance, and our guidance for Setting up an LGBTQI+ / Straight Allies Group in your Educational Establishment. These two documents are free resources for educators from The Intercom Trust in partnership with our public-sector stakeholders.

Details

The conference is open to all our professional colleagues in schools & education, the NHS, social workers, community safety & police, family support workers, etc. Places are limited and advance booking is estential.

To book on the Conference please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., and put 'Plymouth Conference' in the subject line.

The cost is £45 per delegate (discount for group of 5+).

Gemma - Thank you

A massive thank you to Gemma budge our Clinical Psychology placement who has now just finished her 10 months with us. We are very grateful for all her hard work, time and professionalism - especially in relation to the Kind Mind course which she co-wrote and co-facilitated. This course was a huge success and feedback was extremely positive. Gemma's legacy to her time with us will be the continuation of the Kind Mind course, which we know will go on to benefit many more LGBT+ people.

We wish Gemma well in her future career.

Networking event

Max went to a lovely networking evening organized by Cartridges Law in Exeter last week. The event was hosted at the Boat Shed.

Here's Max, Bridget and Wendy attempting to get a hole in one at the pop-up mini golf course!

Today is Intercom's 20th birthday!

"When we founded Intercom 20 years ago we had great hopes, but we never dreamed it could develop to bring so much help to so many people across such a wide area of the South West.

Like all the founders, I am so proud of the Intercom team - staff, trustees and volunteers - who have achieved so much for our communities and for LGBT+ individuals and families in need.

We are prouder than ever to be part of, and helping to support, such a wonderful and varied range of LGBT+ communities. The landscape has changed amazingly over these last 20years. In 1997 we could only find 3 community initiatives to engage with, where now there are about 100.

Here's to the next 20 years."

Michael Halls, co-founder and Executive Director, Intercom Trust.

Thank you Lota

We were really happy to have Lota join the Intercom Trust team for the past few weeks. She was with us as part of her internship and was working closely with Intercom to help develop a training resource for school staff.

We thank her so much for her hard work and wish her well as she moves on to new adventures.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is held on 17th May. The day was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTI people internationally.

In under a decade, May 17 has established itself as an important date for LGBTI communities to mobilise on a worldwide scale.

We continue to be horrified by the atrocities in Chechnya and the lack of action by governments to challenge the horrific and brutal treatment of the LGBT+ communities.
