National Lottery Community Fund - Announcement

Date added: 14 May 2021

Intercom Trust receives £1.1 million in National Lottery funding over the next 5 years.

South West based LGBT+ charity, Intercom Trust, is being awarded a grant of over £1.1 million over the next 5 years, from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK.

Following the charity’s busiest year yet, the grant will be used to deliver outreach support to LGBT+ communities across the South West with a range of one to one and group activities - held both face to face and digitally - as well as a telephone helpline service.

The Trust currently provides 1-1 support, advocacy and counselling for the LGBT+ communities in Devon, Cornwall, Plymouth and Torbay, and works with individuals and families, as well as also providing support to schools, health and social care services and many more agencies.

Andy Hunt, Chief Executive Officer of Intercom Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this grant from The National Lottery Community Fund over five years, which will help to continue and grow our service to the LGBT+ communities.

“We have just had our busiest year ever – we’ve delivered support and advocacy to 1042 individual clients, we also provided 321 counselling sessions and supported 36 families. We provide support on a wide range of issues, including isolation, family and relationship issues, hate crime and discrimination, self-harm, emotional wellbeing, suicidal ideation, bullying and much more. Our service is also financially supported by Devon and Cornwall CCG’s, Victim support, Tudor Trust and others.”

Rowan Miller, Head of Funding for the South West at The National Lottery Community Fund, said: “At The National Lottery Community Fund we believe that when people are in the lead, communities thrive and Intercom Trust is a fantastic demonstration of that.

As we emerge from the pandemic, services offered by the Intercom Trust are essential in helping individuals and families from LGBT+ communities in the South West region overcome social isolation and improve their mental wellbeing, defend their rights and increase social support.

“Thanks to National Lottery players, we are able to support charities like Intercom Trust and ensure their work can go from strength to strength.”
