Waving the flag for LGBT+ equality across Cornwall’s secondary schools

Date added: 9 October 2020

Today marks the official launch of Intercom Trust’s latest project in Cornwall: The Open Project.

The Open Project aims at enhancing the lives of LGBT+ pupils through dedicated lunch groups, immersive training for education professionals and ongoing support for schools across the county.

We believe that all young people deserve to be respected for who they are and supported to reach their full potential. Inclusive schooling is key to achieving this. When schools include the lives and themes of LGBT+ people in their curriculum, empower their staff with the skills to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, and create safe spaces for LGBT+ pupils, something exciting happens. Young people are given the opportunity to flourish. Pupils challenge bullying and negative stereotypes. Isolation is reduced; self-belief increases. LGBT+ pupils are able to confide in staff that understand what they’re going through.

The challenges facing young LGBT+ people have been compounded by the current pandemic. Our recent report on the experiences of LGBT+ communities during COVID-19 found that 62% of young people living at home had decreased mental wellbeing. Many have been isolated with LGBTphobic family members, forcing them to hide who they are. They have been unable to access their support network or to see their friends. Young people have been exposed to increased hate against LGBT+ people online, and many have experienced stigma in their towns and villages. All of this is in addition to the pressures of understanding their identity and finding their way as young adults.

By 2022, The Open Project aims to work with all thirty-one of Cornwall’s secondary schools. We hope to show that support for LGBT+ youth isn’t radical or difficult, but simply an urgently needed and life affirming intervention.

We’re delighted that the following four schools have signed up to participate in The Open Project: Liskeard School & Community College, Penrice Academy, Torpoint Community College, and Fowey River Academy. This is in addition to the 15 schools Intercom Trust are already working with – and we want you to join the growing list.
