Police Liaison Group

The Police Liaison Group (PLG) is a community project, set up in 2001

  • to improve the standards of policing in Devon Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
  • to work with the police in partnership
  • to act as an external scrutiny body, holding the police to account, and
  • to assist the police to lay the foundations for improving trust and confidence in the police service.

The LGB/T Police Liaison Group for Devon Cornwall and Isles of Scilly was set up with the endorsement of a widely-publicised open meeting of LGB and Trans people living or working in Devon and Cornwall. A year later another open meeting confirmed its community backing, and renewed its mandate.

It is owned and run by the community, not by the police themselves, making it securely independent. This makes the Group more valuable:

  • to LGB/T people, who can see that the Group's independence is not compromised, and that it operates transparently for the benefit of the communities;
  • and to the police, for whom the Group's independence is a guarantee that it can earn and retain community confidence. The police value the fact that they can trust the Group to raise difficult issues identified by the LGB/T communities, and debate these issues clearly and vigorously and effectively.
