Topical Guidelines for Good Practice

Intercom is building up a resource of our own position papers on key issues, which we offer as basic guidelines and good practice suggestions for our partners and stakeholders in all sectors. We add to these regularly. If there is an issue on which you'd like to know our position as a community-led organisation, please let us know what it is.

You can access each position-paper from this page by clicking on the links below. We give a summary conclusion of each position-paper underneath the link.

The position-papers are in Flash format: you can download the free FlashPaper reader from Adobe's website.

1. There is no LGB/T Community

We recommend: Don't use the phrase "The LGB (or LGB/T, or Trans) Community". No such thing exists. Always use the word in the plural: "communities".

We recommend: Avoid “gay” in any such phrase, unless you are specifically referring to “gay men”.

2. Where are you planning to meet?

We ask: If you really do want Intercom and/or other LGB or Trans people to be able to be there, then set up your meetings in venues owned by organisations that are known to be welcoming, or at the very least neutral.

3. Monitoring

We strongly recommend: Don't think of it.
